Plain English, statutory meaning

Free to use. As is. Check your work.

There is no account, so there is no signup funnel to click through. These terms exist to state three things honestly: what the service is, what it does not warrant, and which responsibilities remain yours.

Not legal advice

Written by the people who built the software to describe how it behaves. It is not legal advice; if you need certainty for a commercial agreement, ask a lawyer.

1. Agreement

These terms govern your use of ream.tools and every tool served from it. Using the site means accepting them. If you do not, close the tab — there is no account to cancel and no subscription to unwind.

They are written in plain English on purpose. Where a phrase carries a specific legal meaning — “as is”, “limitation of liability” — it is used in that sense, and the sentence around it is not meant to narrow it.

2. What this service is, and is not

Ream is a collection of client-side document tools delivered as static files. Processing happens in your browser, on your device. There is no server-side component, no user account, no document storage and no support contract.

It is not a backup service, a records system, or a substitute for professional advice — legal, medical, financial or archival — and nothing it produces should be relied on as such.

No service level is offered. The site is served by a static host and is expected to be available, but availability is not guaranteed, and the site may change, be suspended or be withdrawn at any time. Because no data is held, that costs you nothing but a bookmark.

3. Acceptable use

You may use the tools for any lawful purpose, including commercial and professional work, at no cost and without asking permission.

You may not use the site to process material you have no right to possess, or to remove protection from a document in order to see content you are not entitled to. Unlock PDF requires the current password for exactly that reason: it removes an encryption wrapper for someone who can already open the file, and does not attempt to guess one.

You may not attempt to make the site send a document anywhere — if you find a way, that is a security report rather than a feature request. You may not present the site, or a copy of it, as your own product.

4. Your documents and your responsibilities

Everything you open remains yours. Ream claims no licence, no ownership and no interest in your documents or your output. There is no copy on any server for a claim to attach to.

Some operations carry consequences that no software can take on your behalf. Redaction: verify the output before it leaves your control — select the text and try to copy it, on every page you marked. Signatures: a drawn or typed signature is an electronic signature, accepted for ordinary contracts under eIDAS and ESIGN, but it is not a certificate-based signature with a tamper-evident seal or a trusted timestamp. If a counterparty requires a qualified signature, use a trust service provider.

Conversion: Office and HTML conversion reconstructs text structure rather than exact layout, so check the output before circulating it, and note that compressing by rasterising makes text unselectable. PDF/A: the tool writes the structure a profile asks for but does not validate conformance — run the output through veraPDF if a recipient requires proof.

Compliance: obligations about retaining or protecting records attach to the copy on your disk. Local processing removes the third-party copy; it does not remove your duty to look after the local one.

5. No warranty

The site and every tool are provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy or non-infringement.

No warranty is given that any output is correct, complete, standards-conformant or suitable for your purpose. Software that parses a format produced by thousands of different applications will meet files it handles imperfectly; that is true of every tool in this category, including the paid ones.

Nothing here excludes liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be excluded. Where a jurisdiction does not allow a particular exclusion, it applies only to the extent permitted there.

6. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Ream is not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive loss, or for loss of profits, revenue, data, goodwill or opportunity, arising from your use of the site or from any output it produces.

Where liability cannot be excluded but can be limited, it is limited to the total you have paid to use the site, which is zero. That is not clever drafting: the tools are free and there is no revenue relationship. The practical consequence is that the risk sits with the person who can check the output — you, with the original in front of you.

Keep your own backups. Ream cannot lose a file it never had, and equally cannot recover one you have overwritten.

7. Intellectual property

The name Ream, the wordmark and the design of this site belong to the project. Link to any page freely and quote short extracts with attribution; do not present a copy of the site as your own product.

The tools are built on open-source components — pdf.js, pdf-lib, Tesseract.js, fflate and others — each under its own licence. Those licences are unaffected by these terms and grant you their rights directly. Your documents, and the files produced from them, are entirely yours.

8. Third-party services

Two optional features reach outside this site: the OCR language model download, and a language model provider whose key you supply.

When you use a provider, your relationship is with that provider, under their terms and their privacy policy. Ream has no visibility into that transfer and no ability to recall it. Choose accordingly — including pointing the tool at a model on your own machine, in which case nothing leaves your device.

9. Changes

These terms may be revised. When they are, the date at the top changes and the changelog records that a revision happened; a material change gets its own entry rather than a silent edit. Continuing to use the site means accepting the revision. Because nothing is stored, there is no data to migrate and no notice that would be meaningful.

10. Governing law and contact

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute arising from them. Mandatory consumer protections in your own country of residence are unaffected.

If a provision is found unenforceable, the rest remains in force, and failing to enforce something once is not a waiver of it. Questions go to hello@ream.tools, where a person reads them.

The short version, again

Use it for anything. Do not pretend you built it. Do not use it to open something you have no right to open. Check a redaction, a signature and a conversion before you rely on them, because the tool cannot know what your document is for and does not warrant that it is right.
