The whole toolbox

Pick the thing you actually need

No tool asks you to create an account, and none of them phone home. Open one, use it, close the tab.

Three steps, none of them a server

The file goes from your disk to your screen. That is the entire journey.

  1. 01

    Drop the file in

The bytes are read straight into this tab. There is no upload endpoint to send them to — the network panel stays quiet.

  2. 02

    Pick your settings

Every option is applied locally: page ranges, compression level, watermark position, password, signature placement.

  3. 03

    Take the file back

The result is assembled in memory and handed to your browser’s download manager. Nothing is stored, nothing is queued.

Why local wins

Uploading a contract to edit it was always a strange idea.

The usual workflow sends your document to a company you have never met, holds it on a server you cannot see, and deletes it “within a few hours” on a schedule you cannot verify. Ream removes that whole exchange.

The technical detail
  • No upload, so no breach surface

Other PDF sites ask you to hand over the document. Ream never has it. Close the tab and there is no copy left anywhere but your own disk.

  • No daily limits, no premium wall

Because there is no server cost per file, there is no reason to ration. Merge 200 files, compress a 400 MB scan, do it again tomorrow.

  • Works with the Wi-Fi off

Install once and the whole toolset runs offline. That is also the strongest proof of the privacy claim: an air-gapped laptop can still do the work.

  • No upload wait

A 50 MB file takes seconds here, because the only transfer is from your disk into RAM. Upload-then-download adds two round trips to the internet.

Where it honestly stops

Ream is better at some jobs than others, and says which.

Anything that needs a real Office rendering engine — pixel-exact PowerPoint conversion, spreadsheet chart reproduction — cannot be done honestly in a browser tab. Those tools state their limits on the page instead of quietly losing your layout.

  • Structural PDF edits: merge, split, reorder, rotate, crop
  • Encryption, signatures, redaction, OCR
  • PDF → Word, Excel, Markdown, text, images
  • Pixel-exact Office → PDF layout
  • Server-side URL fetching for HTML → PDF

Questions people actually ask

Straight answers

If something here is wrong, that is a bug worth reporting — the email at the bottom of every page reaches a human.

Are my files really not uploaded?
Correct. Ream has no upload endpoint in its codebase. You can verify it three ways: watch the network monitor on this page, open the browser network panel while you process a file, or disconnect from the internet after the page loads and keep working.
How can it be free with no limits?
Every operation runs on your CPU, so there is no server bill per document. There is no account system because there is nothing to store. The rest of the site costs less to run than a single server-side conversion.
What are the real limitations?
Heavy jobs are bounded by your device memory — a 500 MB scan on a phone will struggle. Compressing re-renders pages as images, so text stops being selectable. Word, PowerPoint and Excel conversion reproduces text structure rather than exact layout, and flags what it could not carry.
Does it work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. The tools run in Safari on iOS 15+ and Chrome on Android 8+. Merge, split, compress, rotate, page numbers, watermark and JPG conversion are all comfortable on a phone. Add it to your home screen for offline use.
Is there a limit on file size?
No limit is imposed by Ream. The practical ceiling is your device: roughly 300–500 MB per file on a modern laptop, less on a phone. When a file is too large the browser will report an out-of-memory error and your original is untouched.
What happens to a file after I close the tab?
It is gone. Files live in JavaScript memory and are released when the tab closes or reloads. There are no cookies, no local storage of documents, and no analytics beacons.

No account. No card. No catch.

Try it with the file you would not normally upload.

A payslip, a passport scan, a signed contract. That is the real test of whether a document tool deserves to exist.
